Discovery Park sits on Magnolia Bluff on the western edge of Seattle, and its scale is what surprises most people who haven't been. Over 500 acres of forest, meadows, and coastal bluffs, with more than 11 miles of trails and a working lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula. For a city park, it feels genuinely wild, and that contrast with the surrounding neighborhoods is a big part of what makes it such a good outdoor date.
The most popular route is the Loop Trail, which takes you through old-growth forest and down to the beach at West Point, where you get open views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains on a clear day. The West Point Lighthouse is one of Seattle's oldest, and walking up to it from the beach makes for a satisfying destination. Bald eagles are common overhead, and the park is one of the better birdwatching spots in the city year-round. The beach at the base of the bluff is quiet and wide, good for sitting and taking in the view without feeling crowded even on a nice day.
One thing worth knowing: the park is large enough that getting oriented before you arrive is worth the two minutes it takes. The main entrance is off W Government Way, and the Loop Trail is well-marked from the trailhead. Parking is free at the main lot but fills up on sunny weekend afternoons. A morning visit on a weekend gives you the park largely to yourself and the best light on the water. The whole loop runs about four miles round trip to West Point and back, so plan for two hours if you want to take it easy.
Magnolia Village, just outside the park, has a few good options for after your walk. Petite Pierre is a small French bakery with excellent pastries and coffee, a natural stop before a morning walk or after. For lunch or an early dinner, Damoori Kitchen is a Lebanese home-cooking spot just outside the park with a loyal following and the kind of food worth lingering over. The Fishermen's Green Market & Deli is another solid nearby option if you'd rather grab sandwiches and bring them into the park for a picnic instead of eating after.
